Historical significance: This house was built in 1888 for Thomas Howard, who was the president of the Shickle, Harrison, and Howard Iron Company. In 1895, Thomas died, but his wife, Kate M. Howard, continued to live at the house until her death in 1923. The Howards were members of high society in St. Louis, like many of the other residents on Vandeventer Place, and were also philanthropists.
Architectural significance: This house was built in 1888 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It featured a front facing gable, and was built with limestone. The house also featured an oriel window on its eastern side. This was one of the more modest homes on Vandeventer Place, which was filled with some of the largest mansions in the city
