Charles F. May Mansion (2002 St. Louis Ave)

This Richardsonian Romanesque mansion at the corner of North 20th and St. Louis Ave is one of several mansions built on the street as a part of Millionaires Row, a name by which the street was referred to in the late 19th century. The mansion was built by Charles F. May in 1892 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, which is typically characterized by the arched doorways and conical turrets used in the design. The neighborhood thrived into the early 20th century, although the neighborhood was no longer home to the wealthy at that time. The white flight and suburban sprawl after World War II put this area into decline, and over the next 50 years, the area slowly lost a large percentage of its historic housing stock, although many of the mansions on St. Louis Ave survived. Despite many of the buildings nearby going vacant or being demolished, this particular house managed to remain occupied.
