This photo shows the Grand Center theater district in Midtown in 1944. At one time, this section of Grand Ave was lined with mansions, but it was built into a movie theater district in the 1920s. By the time of the photo, the area had essentially become an extension of downtown. Despite the area facing decline in the 1960s and 1970s, most of the buildings from the theater district survived, and were repurposed. Today the St. Louis Theater is now Powell Symphony Hall, and the Missouri Theater now houses the Angad Arts Hotel. The Fox Theater is now a theater for Broadway musicals instead of a movie theater.
