This small two family German settlers home in the Benton Park West neighborhood was built in about 1875, and was likely built right around the time of the Compton and Dry map being published, as it was not yet present on the map. By 1875, the neighborhood where the house was located was still a semi rural area near the edge of urban development. From about 1860 onward, the area began to see developments from German settlers who had moved south to buy the cheap and plentiful land available in the area. By the 1890s, the area began to rapidly develop along the Gravois and Jefferson streetcar lines which brought high volumes of traffic into the area. The area was stable throughout the early and mid 20th century but by the 1980s and 1990s, the suburban flight began to take its toll on the area. Before 1970, the area was known as Marquette Cherokee, but in 1970, it was renamed to Benton Park West. Beginning in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the area began to see revitalization, with a strong Hispanic community moving into the area, as others abandoned it. Today, the area is home to many authentic Mexican restaurants and bakeries, and it has a large number of surviving historic houses, with some dating to before the Civil War.
